I'm doing scrypt mining with threads and no lookup gap. I tried lookup-gap 2 with higher thread concurrency and the cards just ran hotter so I went back to the setting. As for airflow, I have a small case mid-tower? The one card is very close to the power supply though. I also removed the slot-covers on the fan side of the cards to ensure the heat has a way out. It is the best I could do with what I have.
I tried running it open, with the power supply removed from the case and still had the same temperature issues without extenders. Arctic MX-4 is some of the better type and is well regarded and safe to use on a graphics card as there are usually tiny components around a GPU and one spray bit of it and you have a dead card so be careful!
