Bitcoin faq wiki

Where it differs is in the fact that it is completely decentralized. While the Fed controls the US dollar and the Bank of England controls the Pound, no single institution has any claim to ownership of the bitcoin network.

In Satoshi released the now infamous whitepaper which proposed bitcoin — an electronic payment paradigm based on mathematical proof, not trust. He or she wanted to form a currency that had no middleman, could be transferred electronically, very quickly and at low cost.

The mining process also makes sure the transaction processing has accurate records kept. The open source software that contains the mathematical formulas can by its very nature be looked at and verified by anyone who cares to. Because the network is dispersed and democratic, no one authority has the power to edit the monetary policy, be irresponsible and cause a meltdown or anything else potentially detrimental.

Most importantly it means that no government or corporation can control you by taking away your access to your money. Unlike with a bank account which may require a bunch of hoop jumping, anyone with internet access can generate a free bitcoin address with no questions asked. This fact is why people are so excited by the prospect of cryptocurrencies being able to reach the 2 billion unbanked people in the world. You can hold as many bitcoin addresses as you want, none of which are linked to your name, home address or any other personal information.

Of course you can obscure activities a little more on the bitcoin network by using a bitcoin address only a handful of times and not transferring lots of bitcoin to one address.
